However, reports indicate that the club was aware of the offence but allowed the player to continues playing as they faced relegation in 2015.

The victim of the player’s offence is said to have been humiliated and harangued online by her peers after she revealed her relationship with the winger.

Judge Jonathan Rose said the player was all to blame for his own downfall.

Johson has since separated with his partner, Stacey, following the admission that he was involved in the grooming.

The Sunderland-born midfielder, who has 12 England caps to his name, moved to the Stadium of Light from Manchester City in 2012 and was initially suspended by the Black Cats following his arrest and subsequent bail in March.

Having seen his bail extended by Durham Police, Johnson was cleared to return to training later that month and has since remained in the first-team picture.

His last outing for Sunderland was in February against Liverpool where he scored to end the game 2-2.
