Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya Wins Gold medal in the men’s marathon in Rio Olympic Games
KENYA: Eliud Kipchoge has ended Kenya’s dry spell for another gold medal in the men’s marathon after he won gold on Sunday, August 21, at the Rio Olympic Games.
Kipchoge who was the pre-race favorite clocked 2:08.44 to cement his name as one of the great marathoner’s of all time.Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa took Silver while USA's Galen Rupp bagged the Bronze.
Kenya last won gold in the men’s marathon in Beijing in 2008 when the late Samuel Wanjiru made history win Kenya’s first gold medal in the marathon.
Kenya has won six gold medals already at the Rio Olympics. The first gold was won in women’s marathon with Jemima Sumgong, David Rudisha also retained his gold in the men’s 800 metres.
Faith Kipyegon won gold in the women’s 1500 metres and Conselsus Kipruto continued Kenya’s domination of the men’s 3000 metres steeplechase when he won gold for Kenya. Vivian Cheruiyot won gold in the women’s 5000 metres which was the first for Kenya in the competition in history.
Eliud Kipchoge's gold helped Kenya overtake Jamaica and occupy the second position in the athletics medal standings behind USA.
