KENYA: Miriam Wairimu, the widow of the late Nairobi businessman Jacob Juma has made statements that has left many people perplexed.

The widow told the police that she was not related with another businessman Jimmy Wanjigi who many thought to be Miriams Brother.

The mother of two said she did not even understand the relationship between her late husband Jacob Juma and Wanjigi.

It had been suggested that Jimmy Wanjigi was so moved by the murder of Jacob Juma as they were business partners and also related through marriage.

Another of Juma’s business associates, Sirisia MP John Waluke, expressed his shock by the generosity of Wanjigi. He is said to have covered a huge chunk of Jacob Juma’s burial costs.

The tycoon is among 28 ‘people of interest’ who have been quizzed by by police over the killing of the controversial billionaire. He is said to have been one of the last people who talked to the deceased on phone.

He, and opposition chief Raila Odinga – a close ally of the deceased – were among the first people to view Jacob Juma’s body at the Lee Funeral Home after he was murdered on the night of Thursday, May 5.

Jacob Juma was laid to rest on Saturday, May 14, in Bungoma county.

Since the death of Jacob Juma, top opposition leaders have openly said that Deputy President William Ruto colluded with the police to assassinate the businessman. Juma had also accused the DP of wanting to kill him via social media posts.

Ruto is yet to be questioned but he said on Tuesday, June 7, during an interview on Citizen TV, that he was ready to record a statement with the police whenever they asked him to.

An autopsy done on Juma’s body revealed that he was shot twice on the chest, with the bullets exiting out through his back. He also suffered gunshot wounds to his neck and his right arm was badly hurt.

The severe arm injuries could mean that he struggled with the assailants before they overpowered and shot him dead.

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy co-principal Moses Wetangula said police officers are to blame for the murder as the gun used to kill Jacob Juma, an AK-47, was only in the hands of the police.

Raila on the other hand claimed that Jacob Juma was murdered because he was about to release damning information on the Eurobond saga and the National Youth Service scandal.

Raila said that only USA’s FBI or the UK’s Scotland Yard can be relied upon to investigate the circumstances under which Jacob Juma died.

The leaders were invited to record statements with the police on what they knew about Jacob Juma’s murder but they turned down the requests.
