Unconfirmed reports indicate that the man was armed with a knife.
During the incident, President Uhuru Kenyatta was away attending a golf tournament in Muthaiga.
According to the Daily Nation, GSU officers called the fire brigade who cleaned up the scene. The body was later taken to the City Mortuary where police booked it as an unknown man shot at Dennis Pritt Road near State House.
When he was shot, the man had just passed the new administration building that houses various departments and had reached the public car park when he was confronted by security personnel who shot him, a witness is quoted by the Daily Nation.
Security was later tightened around the perimeter fence. The incident is the first shooting at State House and comes after several attempts by individuals to enter it.
Almost a similar period last year March 6th, William Njuguna was arrested by GSU officers before he could access State House.
In court Njuguna said he wanted to see how State House looks, and that is why he was trespassing into the compound before GSU officers on patrol arrested him. Weeks later, Njuguna was found dead at Uhuru Park's main dais with wounds caused by a blunt object.
Another man, Walter Juma, was arrested by GSU in State House on his way to greet his ‘friend’ Uhuru Kenyatta and ask for assistance as he was living in dejection.
